Arlene hi it's marel here and welcome to 1:07 another edition of the affiliate Buzz it's great to have you with us Arlene is away today but I do have a very special 1:13 guest on the line Jonathan Goodman from halard Consulting and we're going to be talking about where to find all the 1:21 quality content you will ever need now Jonathan is uh he started his career 1:26 over 20 years ago at the dawn of the internet age producing websites for Fortune 500 companies Jonathan holds an 1:33 MBA from fairlay Dixon University and Ms from the College of New Rochelle and a 1:39 BFA from ringing College of Art and Design Jonathan's also a friend of the affiliate buzz and has been with us a 1:45 couple of times uh most recently to discuss the Google authorship markup and 1:50 schema Jonathan uh I guess welcome back to the buzz and welcome home thanks so 1:55 much for having me James uh before we dig into this uh this uh conversation we're going to have about literally 2:02 finding all the quality content uh you could ever need I know you and I had a chance to discuss this uh prior to 2:08 getting on the show here uh tell us a little bit about your most recent conference so I went to uh Vermont uh 2:16 that was a one-day conference it was a web marketing Summit uh it was a very uh 2:21 very nice event um Vermont is beautiful this time of year of course and I was 2:27 speaking about SEO efforts that really truly matter it was a a smattering of 2:33 the stuff that I had spoken about at SMX about schema and other things uh changes 2:39 to Panda and Penguin and all of that there are so many conferences these 2:46 days I know uh you can do a Google search um for just about any topic 2:51 whether it be blogging or social media SEO affiliate marketing and uh it kind 2:57 of makes me uh smile a little bit because I remember 10 years ago the very first conference that I actually 3:03 attended was uh in 2002 which would have been right around now right around this 3:08 time with uh Commission Junction University down in good old beautiful uh Santa Barbara California and how time is 3:15 flown over the over the decade and now you look around how many conferences do 3:21 you do you either attend or speak at in a year well I actually use uh lanyard 3:26 decom are you familiar with that no it's it's a great website um it's social 3:32 media relevant ties into your Facebook and actually uh just this week they tied 3:38 into LinkedIn and it allows you to see you know if I'm watching where Ren 3:43 fishkin is going or if I'm watching where Danny Dober or Danny Sullivan are going I can watch their calendar on any 3:51 of these conferences so it really allows me to kind of go down the list I 3:56 generally look you know four five months out to see whether or not there are conferences that are looking for guest 4:03 speakers there's one uh happening in Little Rock Arkansas in March that I 4:09 submitted uh to speak over there and they got back to me they said yes you're definitely going to be on schedule I 4:14 said well you know I'm traveling all that way you know I submitted four proposals could I do two and so they're 4:20 going to get back to me to see obviously there's an expense on my part I have to fly out there and I have to do hotels 4:26 I'm trying to ramp up you know uh for a while I was going to to I was going as 4:31 an attendee to SMX East uh SMX Advanced sces uh WordPress word uh word camps all 4:40 these different things and you have to kind of weigh that against the time that you actually need to be in the office 4:45 now in a later part of my career I'm speaking at a lot of these events so I'm 4:51 trying to speak at about six a year six seven eight a year um you know one every 4:58 other month depending upon where the location is I generally try to stay East Coast just just for the expense um 5:05 because I need to fly back uh back and forth fairly quickly like uh Vermont I landed at uh 12:30 in the morning and 5:13 then I presented at 10:30 in the morning there and uh then I I got on a plane at 5:20 8:30 at night and I got back home by 11:30 these conferences uh you know I 5:27 think are probably a perfect segue and to you know talking about where to find all kinds of quality content I do know 5:35 as Affiliates we are always on the hunt uh for resources where we can shortcut I 5:41 guess uh would be a good word uh the finding and the development of content finding places where we can get great 5:47 content very inexpensively I use uh as listeners know Elance a lot I know uh 5:53 there's a lot of listeners that also use Elance to get articles written uh but we always have to come up with ideas as to 5:59 to what to write about and I know I can spend hours and hours and hours sometimes brainstorming out a series of 6:05 Articles and getting the outlines together uh but there's also some other things that I do and I know you and I 6:10 discuss it as well you're you're doing uh something similar when it comes to to to 6:15 using uh you know I guess conferences and other methods to find all that 6:21 quality content that you'd ever need why don't we dig into that topic we were discussing it before the top of the show 6:27 here about using conferences uh as a as a source for Rich detail and Rich 6:33 information to to develop content yeah so uh take the SMX conference for 6:39 example that I just spoke at um you know not only do I have my presentation but I 6:45 also have the voice data um you know you just go up with your IP your iPhone uh 6:51 all of them have uh you know voice recorders you just hit that voice recorder um you do your presentation 6:58 that's your content you I give it to my transcriber and she writes it out and 7:03 that becomes an article on my website in addition to that as an attendee of the conference I'm actually live blogging 7:11 during all these sessions so I'm you know listening to what everybody else is talking about and I'm gathering up 7:17 information and I'm putting it out onto my website immediately as Affiliates uh we cover 7:23 obviously all topics and in my particular case I'm usually speaking at uh something to do with internet or 7:30 affiliate marketing you're talking with uh the SEO audiences but those people who are are listening who have topics 7:37 that you know maybe completely unrelated there's typically still conferences out there that uh produce information on 7:44 mass and you know we don't actually even have to attend these conferences I do know when it comes to say affiliate 7:51 Summit Sean Collins releases the prior years or the last couple of years uh 7:57 sessions for free and he publishes the the videos of all of these sessions that 8:03 uh are uh you know featured down at commission junk or sorry at affiliate Summit and the nice thing about using 8:11 this kind type of content I guess where we're going with this is you can you can gather up this type of information and 8:17 you can use this as a as a rich resource to to pull down information uh that can 8:24 be turned into articles that can be uh really used in so many different ways I 8:30 know if somebody was to do a 1-hour presentation down at affiliate Summit and and the same with you Jonathan how 8:36 much time would you say you you and not not to take into all of the years of 8:41 experience that pours into it automatically uh but how long does it take you to put together one of your 8:48 talks oh it you know depending upon the level uh that I believe the audience is 8:53 at uh you know SMX I was speaking to what I believed was a fairly educated I 9:00 was in the advanced segment uh so I really needed to be quite detailed there 9:06 it it's I'm definitely I'm definitely doing my share of several hours prior to 9:14 getting up there and actually speaking that includes uh you know reading up on all the material to make sure that I'm 9:20 at the bleeding edge of for the the technology I don't want somebody in the audience saying oh this article just 9:28 came out last week that completely you know debunks what you're talking about so that's critical um putting it into 9:35 the PowerPoint presentation uh you know leveling out all the the notes that I all the note 9:42 points the bullet points for what I'm going to talk about because a lot of my presentations I try not to put the 9:48 actual verbiage I'm not reading right off of the slide so I'm using images to kind of remind myself as to what we want 9:54 to talk about it's definitely several hours of of research that goes into any 9:59 of those presentations I I am the same when I put a presentation together I'm speaking at 10:05 affiliate Summit again in January and again same with me it takes I think about it for weeks actually off and on 10:11 and I take little notes and doodles and then when it finally comes down to putting the outline together and then 10:17 putting the presentation together that could take me quite a few hours and I know most speakers do the same so they 10:22 bring a wealth of information and knowledge to the table to begin and then they sit down and begin to organize 10:28 their thoughts into logical flow then they put together a presentation around it and what I can uh I can see we're up 10:36 against the break but what I'd like to do when we get back is to talk about how listeners can use any conference or any 10:44 podcast so the information that's being shared in this Rich detail because in both cases conferences and podcasting 10:51 typically a lot of thought goes into what's being presented uh and how a listener can seek out conference 10:57 material seek out podcast and then use that material in such a way where 11:03 they're not plagiarizing they're not scraping and they can use it to produce really high quality content uh for their 11:11 site and for their uh for their online business jonan I'd like to talk about that uh when we get uh when we get back 11:16 we'll be radio.fm 13:35 from our families to yours we want to wish you a safe and enjoyable holiday season have a happy holidays everybody 13:41 get the good gifts this year from all of us to all of you webmaster radio.fm 13:47 Wishing you happy holidays and a prosperous New Year time now to hear 13:52 some more affiliate buzz on webmaster radio.fm here's James and arene 13:59 Arlene is away today but I do have Jonathan Goodman from Howard Consulting on the line and we're talking about 14:05 where to find all the quality content you could literally ever need and we 14:10 talked a little bit about conferences and I'd like to dig in to that uh in just a moment Jonathan let's also talk about podcasts I do know that uh I use 14:19 podcasts a lot to create content and I'm not talking about specifically actually 14:24 recording a a podcast I'm talking more about using a podcast whe whether it's 14:29 one that I've done myself or somebody else's podcast as also another uh you 14:35 know absolutely rich resource of information and again when you're out there looking around the net there's so 14:40 many uh conferences out there but there's also now so many different podcasts on all kinds of topics whether 14:47 uh you know maybe head over to petli radio.com and find some of the funniest pet podcasts you could ever hear or you 14:54 know just do a search for podcast directories to find literally thousands if not tens of thousands of uh podcasts 15:01 out there and these two are uh an absolutely great resource of uh of 15:06 information now Jonathan I know some people are probably thinking you know we can't plagiarize you're not you don't 15:11 mean James you can just go take these people's information and then reuse it that's not what we're talking about is 15:17 it no not at all you know uh you and I both frequently use Elance and there are 15:24 some fantastic editors on elans uh what I like do is once I've worked with an 15:32 editor for a while I'm able to feel confident to say to them go and listen 15:37 to this podcast extrapolate out all of the really interesting unique features 15:44 of what they're talking about get a couple of quotes from that person that's speaking you know find out who that 15:52 person is who's running the show what's their website and then pull in all of 15:57 that information and and you know here's how I feel about it maybe it's a different view than what they're talking 16:05 about or maybe I have additional information that I can add and bring to the conversation it really kind of helps 16:11 the uninitiated or you know somebody who's just not as creative to be able to 16:17 look at other people's work and say that those that's really what I want to be 16:23 talking about but I I have a difficult time formulating it um here's my editor 16:28 she's going to go and do it for me and it really works out great I do something 16:33 very very similar in fact I pulled out uh just a couple of little paragraphs right out of the writer spec that I use 16:39 uh anytime we're using a podcast and I do find that it really shortcuts things for me too because if I have to sit down 16:45 and kind of brainstorm out the idea for a topic and then really dig through and go do all the research on it which I do 16:51 a lot but sometimes you just want to have a different way to go about it uh I can go out and find a podcast on just 16:57 about any topic known to man these days and then I I give them a little instructions it says I'd like you to 17:02 have a listen to the podcast below and this is to the writer and I give them a link to the podcast I'd like you to pull 17:08 out all the tips the techniques the strategies being discussed in the podcast I'd also like you to reference 17:15 the podcast as the source of information I'd like you to use the stories the real 17:20 names uh the names of the people and the names of the websites that were shared in the in the podcast I want these 17:27 articles to be very real and then I will give them you know maybe some additional instructions on you know 17:33 making sure that we're providing our commentary so if I've listened to that podcast which I typically have I'll have 17:39 some thoughts on it as well which I'll give to the writer to include maybe a quote or two or something that I agree 17:44 with or don't agree with and it just it just shortcuts things so well and because same because you know in the 17:50 same idea that it takes time to put a uh a one-h hour talk together at a conference which you can do the exact 17:57 same thing with uh uh because somebody else has already taken all that time and 18:02 care and detail and poured their experience into it we really we really can get some really rich resources can 18:08 we yeah and you're not plagiarizing because what you really want to do within that article is talk about the 18:14 person that's speaking about this and actually you know even backlink to their website give them full credit for the 18:21 information that they've provided and that not only helps you to show that 18:26 you're working within a larger Community but it really is the reason why they did the podcast in the first place they're 18:33 looking for the recognition they're looking for the audience and you're just helping them expand Their audience and 18:40 that goes exactly the same for the conference material I know with affiliate Summit producing and 18:46 Publishing uh each one of the the talks and there's probably I don't know a dozen 18 good solid talks at every 18:53 conference every one of those is typically an hour long some of them are panels so you can pull those apart to 18:59 and you could develop content around those but I guess what I would you know recommend to listeners is to take 19:04 whatever topic you're in and go have a look around uh you know Google get doing 19:09 some Google searches here for conference materials uh what conferences are are in your industry if you're in the pet 19:15 business or you're in health and fitness goodness knows there's all kinds of health and fitness uh conferences out 19:22 there there's all kinds of health and fitness podcasts and I don't typically spend any more money either with the 19:28 right writers and stuff to have them listen to uh to a podcast the podcasts are usually 15 20 30 minutes uh long 19:35 doesn't take them a lot of time to go through them they sit down they as Jonathan said they listen to the podcast 19:41 they extrapolate all the high points out of it they get the tick the tips the techniques the strategies I do want them 19:47 to share the stories the real names the names of the people and the websites and as Jonathan said giving them a link back 19:55 uh to the site uh to their site of course get a backlink and the recognition and the additional exposure 20:02 and Jonathan in your particular case and I can see we're coming right up against the break if somebody was to take one of 20:07 your talks and to do exactly what we just said would you have any problem 20:13 with them no not not whatsoever because as long as they're mentioning by my my 20:19 name uh hopefully referencing the company that I own and giving me a link 20:25 showing you know who this person is whether that's to my LinkedIn profile or Google+ profile or the website Howard 20:33 consulting.com itself it's all valuable to me because I'm reaching an audience that I wouldn't be able to reach 20:40 anyway Jonathan I can see we are up against the break we'll be right 20:45 back more affiliate Buzz coming up after we hear from our sponsors how much time 20:51 do you spend on SEO research and competitor analysis what if we told you 20:57 that there was an easier faster way happy holidays and a prosperous New Year time now to hear some more 23:13 affiliate buzz on webmaster radio.fm here's James and 23:18 Arlene Arlene skipping out on us today but uh I do have Jonathan Goodman from Hower Consulting on the line and we're 23:25 talking about where to find all the quality content you will ever need and I'd like to Jonathan I'd like to uh 23:31 maybe get you to if you wouldn't mind encouraging listeners to actually really act upon this to go out and do a Google 23:37 Search and start looking for this type of information it can make a really big difference can't it absolutely I mean 23:43 everybody understands that content is King and that the we need to be out 23:49 there from my side I need to be working with clients who understand this who 23:54 understand that they need a portion of their work week has to be focused on 24:00 reaching out to the community online building content whether that's voice 24:06 video or articles all of the voice and video obviously can be transcribed into 24:12 articles which help get index better in Google but all of that is is so 24:18 critical we also talked about ebooks before we uh we got on the call today 24:23 ebooks uh is something of course I'm very uh you know amiliar with I wrote 24:29 one back in 2002 Revisited it a couple of times and I've written a couple others since and it's a great way to go 24:35 but it too can be a real challenge to pull that information together into uh 24:41 into an ebook anybody that's sat down and tried it it's easy to say I'm going to write an ebook it's a whole other thing to actually accomplish it and get 24:47 it out the door uh but some of the stuff we're talking about this can really help in that regard as well counted 24:53 absolutely you know uh our original conversation one of the first shows that I did on on your show uh was talking 25:00 about the ebook that I was writing about analytics and how I was crowdfunding that and everything well that you know 25:08 that only only until you actually sit down to try to write an ebook do you 25:14 understand how unbelievably difficult it is to scope out this whole thing and I'm 25:19 not a I'm not a writer it's not my background I'm a I'm a business and IT guy so to take the information that I've 25:29 already written into articles on the website some of which um are transcribed 25:35 from seminars that I've given uh some are uh opinions or some of them are even 25:40 live blogs and take all that with a really great editor and then again 25:46 repurpose that content in a different format and build it out as an ebook is 25:52 just another great way to gain a larger audience I do know when we put together 25:58 the uh affiliate marketer handbook we actually uh came up with the idea I say we because I had an editor at the at the 26:05 time as well who I still work with to this day just pinged me on Skype actually uh we sat down we're going to 26:10 put together this little book we didn't have a name for it yet we figured it take a couple of months at best and uh we'd be out the door with it and I'll 26:17 tell you what six months later it was finally done and it was so much work and 26:24 to come up and sit down and and come up with we threw many copies in the garbage we the original ideas for the cover 26:31 everything went out the door in fact 2 months into it we really hadn't got anywhere other than realized all the 26:37 things that we didn't want to do whereas today I do know just using this strategy 26:42 that you mentioned audio and you know taking that information and and putting it out there 26:49 finding the detailed you know info out there and then and I do know you you as well you uh record things a lot as well 26:57 just to help you through it because you you talk a lot better than you write you said yeah yeah in fact uh that's how I'm 27:03 going to do the analytics book now is I've uh I'm working with you know I'm going to set up a a podcast it's going 27:09 to be a private podcast and it's going to be me just talking about analytics uh 27:15 the important data and I'll move through the chapters that I want to talk about and the specific information but uh you 27:22 know there's such a a huge difference between my ability to talk and my ability to right that this is just going 27:30 to this is the way that it's got to get done because I'm motivated to do it but to sit down it would take you know four 27:38 times the amount of time that it would if I was just what I'm doing now is I'm going to go on to the to the podcast I'm 27:45 going to talk about the information and the data and move you through it and then that's going to get transcribed 27:51 that's going to be an article and then as the chapters build out once everything is put together the editor 27:57 gets it again and she really builds out a full ebook so I you know it's gonna it's G to take a while still but not as 28:04 much at least it's getting done I do I do something very similar where I will gather up all of my notes 28:12 and all of my thoughts for a particular might be an article it could be a chapter of a book where I'll get 28:18 everything it might have just listened to a podcast that was really interested or I've gathered up some articles that I 28:24 thought were really presenting something in a unique sort of way and I'll get all this in front of me and then I'll just 28:30 put my headset on and I'll I'll have a conversation with the writer about what I'm looking at and I'll just I'll just 28:36 go 10 15 20 minutes having a discussion in a logical order that I think the chapter should flow out of and then I 28:42 could pause and talk and say well you know you may want to go research this a little bit and talk a little bit about that but it's all about coming up with 28:49 the the rich detail uh and information and conferences is is just a great place 28:55 to do that uh and podcast as well Jonathan one final thing and maybe just 29:01 uh as we wrap her up I do know you have a you've launched a brand new directory that uh that listeners uh probably would 29:09 be interested in yeah you know directories are incredibly important uh you know in SEO uh we're always trying 29:17 to add to good viable directories and what I've actually done is expanded 29:23 Howard consulting.com to have in itself a direct within the website and it's a 29:30 professional directory so lawyers and doctors and other SEO professionals um 29:36 everybody can come in and put in their content for their business and the 29:43 yearly fee right now we're running it it's 99 Cents for the year so I just want a lot of you know companies out 29:49 there to to take the opportunity and go in and build up the directory and that's it Howard 29:55 consulting.com could you spell that for us h a l y a r d c o n s u l t n 30:05 g.com Jonathan for anybody that would like to get a hold of you to to talk uh discuss your SEO Services how would they 30:11 get a hold of you uh I can be reached at J Goodman halard consulting.com I'm on 30:18 Twitter at halard consult c nslt um I'm uh on LinkedIn and Facebook 30:27 there's a we have a Facebook
